Jerry turned up in Granbury the next day, soon after half-past two. There was no one at home, and Mrs Frost’s car was not in the garage. That was a disappointment, but Jerry spent his two hours neatening up the turf. The garden tools were kept in the garage and, though closed, it was unlocked – sheer folly, Jerry thought as he wheeled out the hose and connected it up. After he had carved out two new flower beds and forked them over, he gave the new turf a good watering. Then it was time to go. He couldn’t leave a note; he had neither pen nor paper. They’d see what he’d done and would understand, and he’d telephone. He was, after all, due another twelve pounds, and Mrs Frost wasn’t one to cheat.
